The Scientific Method

The Scientific Method

evidence Must admit, reality is fascinating. I’m a firm advocate of Darwin’s Theory of Evolution based on the mountains of evidence we can’t ignore. I think Einstein’s General and Special Theories of Relativity are also a foregone conclusion that has been examined in depth. Quantum Theory is so revolutionary most people don’t even know what to do with it, much less how to explain it. But here’s something you may not know. There are theories and there are laws.

So what’s the difference? I’ve had people ask me from time to time, in defense of evidence based conclusions, that if evolution is true, why is it still a theory and not a law. Here’s the nutshell: laws are usually defined by specific mathematical equations and theories can’t be nailed down in the same manner, such as the Theory of Plate Tectonics, and Evolution. These concepts are broad and encompass unpredictable patterns. They are not mathematical equations, but they are still considered factual and are supported by evidence.

Then we have fiction. Fiction stretches the truth to entertain, such as using Faster Than Light propulsion. I must say, however, that even at ten times the speed of light, it would take four months to travel to our nearest neighbor, Alpha Centauri. The speed of light is about 186,000 miles per second, or for those of you who are metric minded, that is nearly 300,000 km per second. It’s nearly eight trips around the earth at the equator, per second. It’s really, really fast. And yet, just a few centuries ago, most people thought the Earth was flat.

I suppose what I’m getting at is that although we don’t think it is possible, today, that we will ever reach speeds as fast or faster than light, or that any alloys we know of or elements could sustain the pressure, or that time and gravity will goof up all of our equations, don’t write it off just yet. In another thousand years, what might humanity have come up with while they look back at us and laugh.

Splendor in the Gas

Splendor in the Gas

OK, that’s a little cheesy, but we don’t have grass in Las Vegas, just cactus and rocks. So let me slide on this one. I wanted to share an inspirational photo, taken by the Hubble a few years ago. It’s truly jaw dropping beautiful gas forming a nebula, a stellar nursery.

NGC 6357 is a dreadful name for this amazing cosmic creation, about 8000 light years from us, also known as the Lobster  Nebula, and the War and Peace Nebula, visible in the constellation Scorpio. Some of the most massive stars in the Milky Way are found here.NGC6357 (2)

In The Beginning

In The Beginning

It can take a long time to get something really big to move, like a freight train with 100 cars or a rocket with a satellite. In this case, getting into the stratosphere has been a decade in the planning and simmering stage, followed by the designing and building stage, and now, the launching and moving stage of science fiction.

As a life long nerd and bookworm, it’s a rather natural place for me to land, here, where a three dimensional chess board collects dust in a corner, a periodic table of elements is posted on the wall, and a photograph of an alien carrying off my child to Area 51 is tacked on the cork board. I live in Las Vegas, so it wouldn’t be a long journey; neither is it very far from The Stratosphere. And this is where the epiphany occurred, that primordial need to tell the story, to educate and engage at the same time with a message of hope for what our future holds if humanity will trust in itself.

Expect photographs, breakthroughs, stories about science and space, biology and technology, a touch of history and a spark for your imagination. I’ll try to bring a little comedy along as well, so we aren’t bogged down in serious details but can soar and exercise your imagination while you nourish your soul.

I must warn you to be aware of animal stories that could appear at any time mixed among the nebulae, robots, aliens, and black holes. I hold a state license as a veterinary technician and although I am not working in a clinic, hospital, school or shelter, I’ve done all of those, from parrots to pocket pets, and live with a few dozen critters that keep me occupied and entertained, which I will pass on to you under the category of “biology”, a legitimate science, but more fact than fiction in these cases!

And it’s 3, 2, 1,  liftoff!
